Remembering Gian Paolo Callegari


Gian Paolo Callegari (pictured on the right) was born on March 7, 1909 in Bologna, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. Callegari was an Italian journalist, writer, screenwriter and filmmaker who was active in film and television between the 1940s and 1970s. Known mostly as a screenwriter, he was sometimes credited under the pseudonym of Albert L. Whiteman.
 
He wrote, among other things, the script for the television series ‘Canne al vento’ (1958) based on the novel by Grazia Deledda and numerous screenplays for adventure, historical and peplum fiklms.
 
A law graduate, he was a journalist and war correspondent for several newspapers during World War II, for the newspaper La Tribuna where he had been a film critic.
 
Gian Paolo was also the author of dramas and novels, predominantly written between 1940 and the mid-1950s. Among his works as a writer include La terra e il sangue, Il cuore a destra, La pista di carbone, Un pugno di mosche, I baroni, Fringuelli per l'arcivescovo, Janchicedda
 
At the outbreak of World War II he began his film career by writing his first screenplay. His first
work in this direction was the subject of a fictional documentaryL'ebbrezza del cielo” filmed by Giorgio Ferroni in 1940.
 
As a director of documentary films, Callegari collaborated in 1946 with Indro Montanelli and Vittorio Metz, he authored a film on the Italian Resistance “Pian delle Stelle” commissioned by the Volunteer Corps Freedom.
 
Callegari wrote the screenplay for one Euro-western “The Kid of the West” (1942). He died in Italy in 1982.
 
Today we remember Gian Paolo Callegari on what would have been his 105th birthday.
