Hartmut Beer was born in Pabianice, Poland on May 21, 1941. The son of a bricklayer the family had to leave their home because of the war and find a new place to live. After graduation at the Babelsburg Film Academy in 1964 he taught at the Meiningen Theatre, where he also played the part of Romeo. Other stage appearances were held in Greifswald, Annaberg and Freiberg Radebeul before Beer returned to work in Meiningen from 1988-1990. Here as Edige in Aitmatov's "A Day Longer Than a Lifetime," his most important and - in his own words - his most difficult role. In 1990, he assumed a commitment to Heidelberg until two years later he was stricken with a disease. During his studies, Beer debuted with small roles in DEFA films, as a supporting actor in the fairy tale "The Golden Goose". His special love for horses, was finally savored in a number of legendary Indian movies “The Falcon’s Trail” (1967), “Fatal Error” (1969), “Apaches” (1973), “The Ride to School” (1981) and “The Scout” (1983), where villain roles were his specialty. In 1997, doctors diagnosed an incurable brain tumor and in his last few months were spent with his faithful caring sister Heather Barbara Schmidt Holzweißig. Beer died on May 15, 1998 in Holzweißig, Germany, 6 days short of his 57th birthday.
